Being on the thresholds of the 21st century, the environmental NGO's in all Arab States are endeavouring and doing their utmost.  However, the NGO activities have been dispersed and scattered here and there.  There hasn't been a relevant umbrella that would gather them in this vital significant ambit that would enable them to unify the Arab role, the impact of both activity at the regional and international levels.  Moreover, there has been a desire to establish an entity which is strong, influential and efficient in all environmental and developmental spheres as an outcome of these factors and during the Arab NGO Consultations held in Cairo in November 1990, in preparation for the Earth Summit to become a reality. It is an Arab non-governmental organization which enjoys the legal personality and the full competence in practicing its work and pursuing its goals within financial and moral independence.

Arab NGO Network, Environment and Development (RAED)

Since its inception, RAED has been strongly welcomed by many pertinent Arab NGOs, besides the individual concerned with the environment affairs and sustainable development in the Arab world.  Many of them were keen to affiliate with this newly born entity from various Arab countries:

Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Yemen, Saudi-Arabia.

In addition, the League of Arab States has welcomed this initiative. It has officially recognized and granted an observant status in the Council for the Arab Ministers concerned with the environment, a real manifestation of the true partnership existing between the Arab League and RAED.

Recently, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Esmat Abdel Meguid, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States has kindly accepted the honorary presidency of RAED.

At the international level, the international organizations have welcomed RAED as the United Nation has accepted to grant RAED the consultative status with the UN General Assembly's Economic & Social Council (EcoSoc).
